We collected the ones that astonished us the most over our sailing years. These waterfront destinations are worth visiting in the summer, but many cities offer great waterfront experiences during the offseason as well.

COLOGNE

Which country comes to mind first when you think about sandy, sunshine waterfront destinations? Definitely not Germany, right? Well, it should be. Cologne has an amazing vibrant atmosphere that goes hand in hand with their stunning Rhine River. The city has 22 reserves that balances the rural environment with natural beauty. It is one of the oldest cities in the country and it is also the warmest as it is located between continental and marine climates.

Things to see in Cologne:

People who have visited Cologne may be familiar with the Cologne Cathedral that took 632 years to build. If you haven’t, it is a must-see building if you are in the city. There are also several fountains and churches built in Romanesque style that make the scene more attractive for visitors. It can be a pleasure to visit the town, particularly for art lovers, as it has the second most galleries in the world, after New York. The river gives an impressive view of the Old Town (Altstadt), Hohenzollern Bridge (Hohenzollernbrücke) and Rheinauhafen.

Things to do in Cologne:

Whether you are looking for a relaxing holiday or some days full of fun activities, Cologne is a good choice. The city holds the historical Cologne Carnival every year and several other ones as the town is the official capital of carnivals, giving the opportunity to meet with locals and to enjoy the atmosphere. As gastronomical destination visit the Chocolate Museum on the waterfront. At the end of the day you can stop to have dinner in one of the cozy restaurants by the water.

Start to explore the water from Landungsbrücken, the most famous water station in Hamburg. Watching the sunset from this spot can be a memorable and very romantic for any couples. The Elbe river provides not only romantic moments, but it is also the place of the well-known fish market of the city, welcoming visitors from all over the world. In the summer, the river is an awesome spot for sunbathing, picnicking and spending time with friends. You can also choose to visit Germany’s only private zoo, giving an artificial habitat for monkeys, tigers, elephants, seals and many others. If you are a lover of shopping, Jungfernstieg is the ideal spot for you! It is a main shopping street and it is a perfect place to stop for an ice-cream or coffee while getting some nice dresses from some of the numerous, fashionable boutiques. FRANKFURT

Frankfurt, a metropolis of Germany, lays on the River Main with its approximately 750,000 habitants. It is one of the biggest financial centres of the country and numerous nationalities make the city an international hub. The town is known as Chicago on the Main or Mainhattan, because of its landscape of tall buildings.

Things to see in Frankfurt:

Frankfurt's Old Town (Altstadt) gives place to the most picturesque square of the city, called Römerberg. Here visitors can explore the Justice Fountain (Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen) and many shops as it is one of the city’s busiest areas. More than 20 museums serve the needs for art and culture on both sides of the river and people can visit the Museum of Ancient Sculpture, Icon Museum, German Architectural Museum or Museum of Applied Art among many others. If you have visited all the museums, it is time to stop by The Palm Garden, the largest botanical garden in Germany including tropical and subtropical plants and it is definitely recommended to visit. Germany’s determinative writer, Johann Wolfgang Goethe was born in Frankfurt and although his house was destroyed in World War II, it was later rebuilt and today welcomes visitors. DUISBURG

Duisburg is located at the junction of two rivers, the Ruhr and Rhine. The area is well-known for its harbours, nightlife and waterfront restaurants. The world’s largest inland harbour is located in the town and the fifteenth-largest city in Germany gave place for important commerce and steel production in the past.

Things to see in Duisburg:

German Inland Waterways Museum is a great start while discovering the city. Located in the Inner Harbour and visitors can even discover a full-size sailing ship. Germans are outstanding at treating and displaying their own history, even if it at times shows a darker side. Instead of hiding the marks of the industrial era, Landschaftspark is a great place to get to know the former steelworks by turning the building into a public park.

Things to do in Duisburg:

Tiger and Turtle is another symbolic galvanised steel building that attracts visitors who are eager to visit places off the beaten track. Explore it through the walkways and get a taste of the historic era. The monument is 21 meters tall and it cost 2 million Euros to build. Duisburg Zoo is one of the biggest wildlife park in Germany and it is well-known for its dolphinarium and is definitely worth your time. Where to start? A great place for those hungry for fashion, culture and art can visit Paris. The cultural hub is on the bucket list for many of us. The Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, and Montmartre are some of the amazing places to visit. The city gets extremely crowded between May and July by visitors. It can therefore be better to visit the capital during the offseason.

Things to see in Paris:

Let’s start with the most iconic spots of the city. Book your ticket up to the Eiffel Tower and explore the city from the top. If you decide to join a guided tour, you can get to know numerous interesting facts about the building. If you want to take advantage on the Seine river then there are many activities that we can recommend. Paris is the city of love. Especially during the summer and spring it can be simple, but memorable to bring some fruit and cheese with a bottle of French wine on the banks of the river and enjoy the view. Numerous cruising companies operate on the river, offering day and nighttime tours. It is an easy and relaxing way to explore popular spots of the city, including the Eiffel Tower, Ile Saint Louis, the Louvre among many others. Other possible water activities can be scuba diving, canoeing or kayaking. In order to get a taste of being a true “Parisian” visit one of the food streets of the city. Rue Cler, Rue Mouffetard, Rue Montorgueil, Rue Des Martyrs are some of the possible streets that you can target for tasty cheese, wine, baguette or even snails for adventurous tourists. Marseille is an old port city in Southern France and it was a junction of trade and migration back in the old days. It is the second-largest city in France and it has an outstanding maritime and cultural history. Today the city is the embodiment of an amazing mix of old, dirty and dangerous history and modern French culture, spiced up with the gifts of the Mediterranean Sea.

Things to see in Marseille:

Visit the Old Port, one of the most picturesque spots of Marseille. It is a great place not only because of its beauty and rich historical background, but also there are many possible activities to enjoy near the port. Of course, you can not leave France without visiting at least a few museums and Marseille is the place of Centre de la Vieille Charite, Mucem and Musee Regards de Provence. In order to get an authentic experience surrounded by people with a diverse background, visit Noailles the African market for exotic spices, pastries and restaurants.

Take a walk along the Boulevard Longchamp, one of Marseille’s most iconic places, and get a taste of Bouillabaisse, a traditional Marseille dish that is served all around the world. NANTES

Nantes is situated along the Loire River in the Western part of France. It has a rich, old, industrial history as a port. Today it is a vibrant, university city with many possibilities for fun, culture, cuisines and innovation. Why would you visit a biscuit factory and a banana and pineapple warehouse? Read below and you will see.

Things to see in Nantes:

For contemporary art, visit the Hab Galerie. The building is a former banana and pineapple warehouse that was refurbished as a place for Museum of Fine Arts and FRAC Pays de la Loire (regional contemporary art centre). Le Lieu Unique is another interesting museum. Back in the old days, the building was a biscuit factory, today it is a centre of contemporary art and music. For some shopping and a good photos for your blog or Instagram, visit Passage Pommeraye, a shopping centre with ironworks, sculptures, stone elements and luxury boutiques.

Things to do in Nantes:

Do you want to be a child again for few hours? Visit the Machines of the Isle. The place is an exciting combination of innovation, art and fun activities for kids and families. If you want to discover the city, but at the same time to try something cool and innovative, join a Segway tour. The water gives a great possibility for enjoying the nature by paddle boarding and boat tours and of course, having a great dinner or cafe by the banks of the River Loire. Jardin des Plantes is another great place to visit with 7 hectares of green spaces in the centre of the town, with more than 10,000 living species, 800 square metres of greenhouses and more than 5000 flowers. SAINT-TROPEZ

Today the former fishing village is a small, luxury resort with a population of less than 5000 people. Stunning yachts, millionaire moorings, famous nightlife, outstanding beaches. On the French Riviera, Saint-Tropez has become a junction of the elite and tourists who are aiming for lively, beautiful beaches.

Things to see in Saint-Tropez:

Visit the Vieux Port, the centrum of the town with colourful houses, yachts, fishing boats and sit in one of the cafes in the heart of the port. Relax in one of the beautiful beaches, Plage de Pampelonne, Plage des Canoubiers or the smaller Plage de la Ponche. Keep in mind that you are still in France, and if France, then museums. Visit the Maritime Museum, Musée de l'Annonciade or the Musée de la Gendarmerie et du Cinéma. Do not miss the culinary experience and take a tour to one of the vineyards of the old coastal town.

Things to do in Saint-Tropez:

Do your shopping like a local and visit the market for delicious pastries, fruits and vegetables. If you are in the market, ask for the cake of Saint-Tropez, the Tarte Tropézienne. If you want to have some memorable time with friends, do not miss the nightlife of the vivid town and visit some of the incredible clubs. After the night out you can give a morning boost by trying the different water sports that Saint-Tropez offers. Toulon is another amazing coastal town of the Mediterranean Sea, situated at the southern part of France. The city has a rich maritime environment with warships, submarines, ferries, fishing boats and boat rentals. It is one of the most protected natural harbours on the Mediterranean.

Things to see in Toulon:

Visit St-Francois-de-Paule Church or the old town of the city. The quarter was damaged during World War II, but today you can relax in numerous cafes in the narrow streets, surrounded by colourful houses. If you are looking for a hidden spot close to Toulon then Chapelle Notre-Dame-Du-Cap-Falcon is the perfect place with a stunning view of the Mediterranean Sea.

Things to do in Toulon:

Discover the sea and take a boat trip from the port and quayside. If you are looking for adventures on land, try Téléphérique du Mont Faron, a cable car that takes you 584 metres above sea level, to the top of Mont Faron. As the city is a historical naval spot, do not miss the National Maritime Museum where you can discover the arsenal of Toulon. You can try watersports, full of adrenalin, including wakeboarding and waterskiing and if you are lucky you can cruise close to dolphins as well.

AVIGNON

Situated in southeastern France, on the bank of the Rhone River, the town is often called the city of history, city of theatre or city of the Popes. If you decide to visit Avignon you will not get bored by the different neighbourhoods, Michelin-starred chefs, smaller and bigger restaurants, the beauty of the river and World Heritage spots.

Things to see in Avignon:

As one of the ten most visited monuments in France, The Pope’s Palace is welcoming 650,000 visitors every year and it is a remarkable symbol of Christianity. Another World Heritage site is the Saint Benezet's Bridge, a mandatory destination for every tourists, welcoming 300,000 visitors each year. The main square of the town is Place de l'Horloge, which can be a good starting point before you stop by one of the nearby restaurants.

Things to do in Avignon:

The Rhone River gives a great opportunity to take a walk, run or cycle on the banks of the water. Furthermore, if you are looking for fun activities, discover the area on the water on kayak, canoe or cruises. If you are planning to visit museums, do not miss the Calvet Museum, Requien Museum, the Petit Palais or the Palais du Roure.
The Theater Festival is another remarkable event that made Avignon well-known. Around 120,000 art lovers visit the occasion in July to discover upcoming and already known talents.

STRASBOURG

The city is well-known for its political importance, but it has much more to offer to travellers. Laying on the side of the Rhine River, crossed by the Ill River, the city is a maritime hub for tourists, offering many activities not just on land, but on the water as well.

Things to see in Strasbourg:

Until 1874 the Strasbourg Cathedral was the tallest building in the world and even today it offers a stunning view over the city and an outstanding architectural accomplishment. If you cannot leave without a perfectly shot photo, stop by the La Petite France with locks, water routes and weirs. Parc de I’Orangerie is another must-see if you are in Strasbourg, laying over 26 hectares of land.

Things to do in Strasbourg:

Try the German-French inspired cuisine of the city, including choucroute or tarte flambée, traditional French wines like Gewürtztraminer and Riesling, or beers including Fischer, Karlsbräu and Meteor. It can be difficult to plan activities while it is raining, but the interactive science museum, Le Vaisseau is a great alternative, especially if you travel with kids. For water activities you can rent your own boat and discover the area by yourself, or you can participate in organised boat tours. If you have the possibility to drive approximately 15 minutes away from the city, you can try fishing and diving as well.

Birmingham is the geographical heart of England. The city is a cultural hub of the country with innovative museums, forward-thinking architecture and stunning canals. It is impossible to leave the city without memories provided by the different festivals, attractions, shopping facilities and gastronomy.

Things to see in Birmingham:

Enjoy vibrant colours and the relaxing atmosphere in the Stratford Butterfly Farm situated in the historic market town of Stratford-upon-Avon, close to Birmingham. If you are also interested in literature visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace and explore the house where the iconic author was born and grew up. Walk through the Tropical House, laying on 15 acres and enjoy the tropical vegetation or the Akamba Tropical House with a bird walk and a reptile house. And last but not least we can definitely recommend the National Sea Life Centre to discover the marine life.

Things to do in Birmingham:

You can use the water bus all year round to discover the canals of Birmingham. If you are aiming for guided tours, hop on one of the electric narrowboats and get to know the history and hidden spots of the city. Luckily, there is a wide range of possibilities for water sports as well, including rowing, kayaking and much more. The Cadbury World is Birmingham’s chocolate factory, where you can learn more about your favourite confectionery, visit the 4D cinema or choose one of the many other activities. We can guarantee that you will not leave without memories surrounded by breath-taking architecture, street food, fine dining possibilities, galleries and museums.

Things to see in Liverpool:

There are many possibilities to follow the footsteps of Beatles in Liverpool. Penny Lane, the Strawberry Field and many other Beatles-related attractions welcome music lovers for some nostalgia. It might be worth learning to play the guitar like the Beatles before you go, to get you in the spirit of Liverpool. As your next destination visit the Albert Dock, a historical five-story-high block of buildings surrounding the harbour basin. It is a great place before you continue your way to the Beatles Story Museum, International Slavery Museum, Tate Gallery and of course, the Merseyside Maritime Museum. The city is the hometown of Liverpool FC, the world-class football team as well and even if you are not a sport fan, the Anfield Stadium is truly an iconic spot to visit.

Things to see in Bristol:

There are many must-see attractions that you cannot miss if you are in the city. The Harbourside Market showcases the best local creators, collectors, makers, bakers, street food and musicians in the heart of the harbour. St. Nicholas Market is another local spot that you have to see during your holiday. These spots are easily approachable by bus and bike due to the extensive public transportation network.

Things to see in Leicester:

When walking the streets of Leicester, stop by any of the amazing museums and visitor centres like The King Richard III Visitor Centre, The National Space Centre, The New Walk Museum or The Abbey Bumping Centre. Visit Leicester Market, the largest outdoor covered market in Europe and see a wide range of cheeses, meats and wines of the city. PORTO

The second-largest city of Portugal is situated along The Douro River, crossed by magnificent bridges. The land of Port wine is a stunning coastal town with narrow cobbled streets, cafes and rich culture. Tourists, visiting Portugal can take into consideration to visit Lisbon instead and it is also an amazing destination, but Porto is much more authentic and traditional than the capital of the country.

Things to see in Porto:

If you want to get a feel of Porto’s history, then your first destination should definitely be The Ribeira District, with typical narrow streets and ancient houses. One of the most iconic places of Porto is The Dom Luis Bridge and as expected from an amazing maritime destination, how could it be more approachable than by sailing? If you appreciate world-class architecture, then Igreja de São Francisco is waiting for you with extravagant Baroque design.

Things to do in Porto:

Take advantage on the Douro River, take surfing, kitesurfing and stand-up-paddle lessons, kayak and speedboat tours. Just like Istanbul, Turkey's third-largest city is a heritage of different nations and empires that occupied the city, including Greeks, Armenians, Jews and Levantines. Situated on the coast of the Aegean Sea, the third most populous city in Turkey has an amazing vibrant atmosphere, full of life.

Things to see in Izmir:

Izmir is rich in ancient monuments, welcoming millions of visitors every year. Such buildings are the Izmir Agora, Pergamon Acropolis and Ephesus. Furthermore, İzmir Museum of History & Art has the richest collection of ancient artifacts in the country and it is welcoming every visitor with exhibitions in a peaceful environment.

Things to do in Izmir:

Take a bath in Hierapolis-Pamukkale, the natural spa of the city with terraces and crystal clear water, floating down from the hill. For a religious experience visit the beautifully decorated Hisar Mosque, surrounded by busy shopping streets. For moving away from the sparkling urban environment take a walk on Kordon, the seafront of the beautiful Aegean Sea. There are sandy beaches aplenty as well. A great example is the easily approachable Pirlanta Beach with many available facilities.

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, the city of bikes, canals, narrow houses and pleasant ambiance. The area is full of creative restaurants and bars and of course, some of Europe’s most amazing clubs. The labyrinth of canals gently breaks the urban, sparkling feel and you can always find activities to spend meaningful and valuable time in the city.

Things to see in Amsterdam:

Plan your journey from A'dam Lookout where you can explore most of the city from plan view. The most beautiful canal spots of the city provide great opportunities to build new memories with your loved ones, but also to take photos to increase likes on social media while you explore the city. When you are walking through the town, make sure to stop by the Royal Palace and Anne Frank House that are also mandatory destinations if you are in Amsterdam. Encompassing 14 islands, Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and it is a popular destination of numerous Baltic Sea cruise ships. It stands out with its harbourside elegance and locals call their city “beauty on water” with reason. Numerous museums, plenty of parks, unique Swedish cuisine.

Things to see in Stockholm:

The city’s oldest district (Gamla Stan) is a great spot to start your holiday in Stockholm, giving place to the royal palace and cozy, narrow streets. Don’t miss Kungliga Slottet, the world’s largest royal castle still used for its original purpose. If you have visited these places then you have seen how is Sweden today, thus now it is time to see how was it in the past by visiting Skansen. It consists of more than 150 traditional houses and so much more, you can barely explore everything in one day.

Things to do in Stockholm:

The 14 islands and the flat landscape provides amazing spots for getting an amazing view of Stockholm, so take your camera and make the best out of the opportunity. After the cold winter the city turns into a fizzy destination with numerous open-air restaurants both near the water and in the more central areas. Do not miss the opportunities given by the Baltic Sea. The important seaport well-known of its Dutch-style canals situated off the Göta älv river. The city is full of exciting museums, amazing archipelago, experimental food rebels, leafy parks and local brands. It is the largest non-capital in the Nordics and a proud owner of the World’s Most Sustainable Destination Award in 2016, 2017 and 2018 as well.

Things to see in Gothenburg:

Despite the cozy, calm atmosphere there are plenty of recommended places in Gothenburg. Occupying 40 acres and holding about 12,000 species, the botanical garden of the city is one of the largest ones in Northern Europe. Slottsskogen has been one of the favourite places of locals for a long time and it includes the only zoo in Sweden that has free admission. Aeroseum is an amazing place especially for kids having everything from Ikaros to today's modern aircraft and helicopters.

Things to do in Gothenburg:

Although not a typical beach destination for the summer, Gothenburg has a plenty of cozy beaches that are worth a visit for a refreshing swim. For indoor activities visit the Universeum where you can get lost among animals, nature, chemistry, technology and numerous joyful activities. For true maritime lovers we can definitely recommend Maritiman, a maritime museum featuring a submarine, a destroyer lightships, cargo ships and barges as parts of the exhibition. And of course, don’t leave without trying one of the numerous activities on the sea, including scuba diving and snorkeling, water scooters, fly boards, wakeboarding, water-ski, surfing and much more. The capital is situated at Ireland’s East coast at the mouth of the River Liffey and it has a lot of experience to offer from great outdoor and historic walking tours to the best places to chow down. Locals of the city are really friendly, always ready to crack jokes to make you laugh, but if you decide to take a trip to the mountains or cliff, it is just a bus ride away as well.

Things to see in Dublin:

Can’t leave without a well-shot photo? The Spire, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Dublin Castle and the Ha’penny Bridge are the perfect subjects for your post on social media. WARSAW

Warsaw has a long and rich history and it is reflected in its architecture, including Soviet-era blocks and modern skyscrapers at the same time. Approximately half of the town’s area is green, therefore Warsaw turns into a colourful, popping bouquet during the spring with its 95 parks, crossed by the Vistula River. As the water flows it divides the city into two sides. On the left bank you can eat out, participate in different events and entertaining activities. The right side has been kept without developments, giving space for the mother nature with numerous bird species threatened with extinction.

Things to see in Warsaw:

By exploring a Unesco World Heritage, the Old Town of the city, you can travel back in the time and you can get a better image of Warsaw’s rich history and see the stunning Royal Castle. If you want to know more about the artistic values and history of Poland the city has fantastic museums to visit, including the Rising Museum, the Royal Łazienki Museum or the National Museum. The Vistula Boulevards provides a great place to stroll, cycle or just lay and enjoy the view of the river. Alongside the river is the Mermaid for view of one of Warsaw’s symbolic monuments.

The city has a wide range of events during the whole year that gives amazing possibilities for visitors looking for active holidays. Today, due to continuous developments on the bank of the river, it has turned into a pulsing social gathering area with numerous programmes and facilities. As an indoor activity, visit the largest science museum of Poland, Copernicus Science Centre with exhibitions and labs. KRAKOW

Poland's former royal capital today is a student fuelled city full of celebrations of arts, music, dance and food of course. The city’s architecture is a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and baroque architecture, resulting in a visual paradise for its visitors. Similarly to Warsaw, the Vistula runs through the town providing a beautiful piece of nature and numerous possibilities for water and waterfront activities.

Things to see in Krakow:

The city’s Old Town district is an authentic piece of the old days of Krakow and here you can also explore Europe's largest medieval town square, the Main Market Square and Krakow’s most vibrant street, Florianska. Another mandatory neighbourhood to visit is Kazimierz the former Jewish district that was once the cultural centre of Polish Jewry. In Krakow you can find one of Poland’s most visited attractions the Wieliczka Salt Mine with an approximately 300 km long tunnel system. And eventually do not miss the chance to stop by Bazylika Mariacka, one of Poland’s most famous and most beautiful churches.

Given the gift from nature you can utilise the water routes of Krakow and take your friends and family on a rafting or kayak tour, or you can participate in organised boat tours in the day or night as well. The bank of the river is a great spot to get away from the hustle of the city, where one can enjoy a nice peaceful stroll or stop and picnic. Seville, the city of flamenco and capital of Andalusia is situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir River. It was once an important port between the country and America. Busy streets with delicious tapas bars, irregularly planned city scene, houses built in Moorish style and tiny, little square. Seville is definitely one of our favourite destinations when it comes to exploring Spain.

Things to see in Seville:

The enormous Seville Cathedral and La Giralda are two examples of the breathtaking architecture typical in Seville. Do not miss the gardens of the the UNESCO-listed Real Alcázar, the perfect representation of the country and Mediterranean culture. The list of monuments in the city is endless, starting from Barrio Santa Cruz, Parque María Luisa or Basilica de Macarena to the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza.

Things to do in Seville:

The river brings energy not only during daytime, but during the night as well with countless bars and restaurants and spending time near or on the river should definitely be on the activity list. You do not want to miss Feria de Abril, one of the most amazing festivals in Seville ending with a stunning firework over the bank of the Guadalquivir River. If you are looking for activities on the river the high amount of sunshine hours gives a great opportunity to try paddle surfing and kayaking, enjoy boat tours or go whale watching.
